K - 2 Library Media Program -- Student Standards and Proficiencies

Standard 1: The student will understand the role of a library media center as a place to locate materials for enjoyment and for information.

Proficiency 1: Identify library media personnel by name

Proficiency 2: Locate circulation desk

Proficiency 3: Choose books and other materials for his/her own enjoyment

Proficiency 4: Select books of appropriate reading and interest level

 

Standard 2: The student will develop abilities to use a library media center and its resources.

Proficiency 1: Locate easy section of media center

Proficiency 2: Understand the function of the circulation area

Proficiency 3: Locate book return

Proficiency 4: Check out and return books responsibly

Proficiency 5: Define and use the terms title, author, illustrator, and illustrations

Proficiency 6: Use library information systems with guidance

 

Standard 3: The learner will practice ethical behavior in the use of information and library materials and resources.

Proficiency 1: Use proper care and handling of print and non-print media and equipment

Proficiency 2: Exhibit self-controlled conduct in the library media center

Proficiency 3: Use media center and computer facilities productively, responsibly, and independently

Proficiency 4: Comply with Internet guidelines as defined in the district Acceptable Use Policy

Proficiency 6: Locate materials by call number

Proficiency 7: Use print and electronic reference sources competently

Proficiency 8: Use library information systems independently

Proficiency 2: Identify a variety of potential sources of information, including print and electronic sources

Proficiency 3: Choose books and other materials for his/her own enjoyment

Proficiency 4: Select books of appropriate reading and interest level

 

Standard 2: The student will develop abilities to use a library media center and its resources.

Proficiency 1: Understand the organizational pattern of the media center

Proficiency 2: Check out and return books responsibly

Proficiency 3: Search card catalog by title, author, subject

Proficiency 4: Devise effective searches by using keywords, subject headings, and electronic search strategies

Proficiency 5: Distinguish between reliable and unreliable sources

9 - 12 Library Media Program - - Student Standards and Proficiencies

 

Standard l: The learner will solve an information need by identifying a range of appropriate library media resources, and using successful strategies to locate the information.

Proficiency 1: Recognize an information question or need

1. identify the information question or problem

2. identify the information needed in order to solve the problem

3. relate the question to what is already known

 

Proficiency 2: Construct strategies for locating information

1. identify a variety of potential sources of information, including print and electronic sources

2. devise effective search strategies by using keywords, subject headings, and electronic search strategies

3. select resources most appropriate to meet individual need

 

Proficiency 3: Locate and access information

1. recognize a variety of systems for organizing information

2. access information within resources by using indexes, tables of contents, and cross references

3. identify library media center personnel, and major areas of the library media center

 

 

Standard 2: The learner will analyze and critically evaluate information sources for accuracy and appropriateness in solving a particular information question.

Proficiency 1: Extract relevant information from sources

1. scan for keywords and main ideas

2. review information question and adjust search strategies if necessary

3. recognize that annotations indicate the relevance of a source

4. select information appropriate to the question

 

Proficiency 2: Analyze and evaluate information

1. distinguish between relevant and irrelevant sources

2. distinguish between reliable and unreliable sources

3. determine accuracy, authority, and comprehensiveness of the source

4. distinguish between fact, point of view, and opinion

5. identify propaganda, and inaccurate and misleading information

 

 

Standard 3: The learner will organize, synthesize, and apply information to complete an educational task or fulfill a personal need.

Proficiency 1: Use a system to organize and synthesize information

1. take notes

2. synthesize ideas and information from various sources

3. summarize and paraphrase information in own words

4. draw conclusions based on collected information

5. logically organize and sequence the information

 

Proficiency 2: Apply and communicate information

1. apply information in critical thinking and problem solving

2. produce and communicate information in an appropriate format

3. document sources following a specified style

 

 

Standard 4: The learner will evaluate the process and product of information - gathering.

Proficiency 1: Evaluate the efficiency of the information - gathering process

1. revise, improve, and update the process as needed

2. conduct self - evaluation

 

Proficiency 2: Evaluate the effectiveness of the information product

1. determine how well the product met the information need or problem

2. conduct self and peer evaluation

 

 

Standard 5: The learner will practice ethical behavior in regard to information and information technology.

Proficiency 1: Respect intellectual property rights

1. recognize and avoid plagiarism

2. follow an information - seeking process to come to own conclusions

3. express conclusions in own words

4. follow bibliographic form and cite all information sources used

 

Proficiency 2: Use information technology responsibly

1. follow acceptable use policies

2. use equipment for the purposes intended
